scp error

When attempting to transfer a file from one OSX machine to another,
$ scp -P 1234 file user@host:/path/file2
I ran into this error:
stty: stdin isn't a terminal
It turned out that the error was coming from the remote machine, which had the following in its .bashrc:
# allow ctrl-s for forward command search (compared to ctrl-r)
stty stop undef
To resolve this error, I moved the above to .profile on the remote machine.
